Title:
Word '97 on
Windows 95 or 98 reports Illegal Page Fault accessing RPCSS.EXE
Keywords:
Microsoft Word, Word 95, Word 97,
DCOM, COM Services Delivery, RPCSS.EXE
Scope:
All Sites running Microsoft
Office 95 or 97 on Windows 95 or 98, with DCOM enabled (regardless of
Real°Pac being operational at the time or not)
Release:
n/a
Description:
Word is launched and runs ok, but
the moment user tries to open or print a document, manually or through
Real°Pac, a Windows "illegal operation" dialog box appears
stating that an Invalid Page Fault has been executed when attempting to
access RPCSS.EXE.
Resolution:
The DCOM Services
must be reinstalled. This is true even if your computer was never
explicitly set up to be what is known as a "DCOM
Server".
First, exit Word. Shut down any other programs. Next, disable Fast Start
in the Control Panel. Reboot the computer. Then, find
RPCSS.EXE (usually in the Windows\System) folder. Rename or delete
the file. Reboot the computer again. Now, depending on
the version of Windows you have, download and
extract DCOM95
if you have Windows 95, or DCOM98
if you have Windows 98. These are self-extracting Microsoft EXE files,
that once downloaded, will automatically install themselves.
Once
the computer is rebooted one more time, DCOM should be restored and Word
should be able to open and print normally.
